Determining the Condition of a Collectible or Rare Book

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

In the World of Collecting Science Fiction and Fantasy hardcover books it’s all about Condition.

Valuing a book as a beautiful object implies that the condition of the volume is important. A pristine, like-new copy is far more pleasing than a volume that has been misused, battered, and abused. A dust jacket which is dirty, torn or sun-faded loses some of its aesthetic value much like a disfigured painting or a chipped statue.

All booksellers agree that the single most important factor in determining the value of a book is condition. Like any other item we collect; be it stamps, comic books or Polia Pillin ceramics, condition is the key to an object’s value. In the world of Science Fiction and Fantasy book collecting, all things being equal, a book, in order to possess the highest value, should be as close as possible to the condition it was in when first published.

Evaluating the condition of a new book is a fairly simple process but don’t assume that just because you’re buying a book newly on the market that it’s in “new” condition” All too often I have picked up a new SciFi or Fantasy book and found that it’s been damaged in shipping or mistreated by potential buyers or bookstore staff. A new condition book should be crisp and fresh without any discernible flaws. There should be no ware, rubbing, marks or blemishes on the corners or pages. The dust jacket, if there is one, should be bright with no chips, dents or tears. It should be in the same pristine state as when it first came out of the publisher’s warehouse.

Evaluating older books is a bit more difficult. There is, unfortunately, no standardized system for determining the condition of an older book. There are, however several standard categories of condition which is used by book collectors and dealers alike. Judicious collectors generally confine their acquisitions to the upper end of the condition spectrum, assuring that each book they choose to add to their collection is judged to be very good , “fine” or “as new/very fine”. Regrettably, due to the subjective nature of these ratings the terms have been applied with considerable variation by both collectors and dealers. Even the Antiquarian Bookseller’s Association of America (www.abaa.org) has little to say on the subject.

The condition of a particular addition to your collection is entirely a personal choice. Of course the general rule of thumb is always; get the best condition copy that you can afford, assuming it’s reasonably priced. Some collectors, however, prefer to keep all the volumes in their library up to a certain standard, for instance; “fine” condition and above. Others are willing to accept a copy in lesser condition with the expectation of finding a better copy later, or if they believe it may be a long time before they have an opportunity to find a copy in a better condition. There is no “right” answer just as there is no “best” author or theme for your collection.

A Word on Dust Jackets

In the early Twentieth Century two industries converged to change the nature of book collecting entirely. The advent of color lithography in the early 1900s coincided with the growing realization in the publishing industry that the plain dust jackets, originally developed simply as book protectors, were an excellent tool for advertising the book and its author. By the early 1920s dust jacket design evolved into a sophisticated sales tool for publishers. The cover of the jacket became a canvas for beautiful illustrations designed to attract potential buyers while the inner flaps and back of the jacket played host to reviews, notes about the author and advertisements for other titles from the publisher. By the middle of the century the dust jacket had become an integral part of the book itself. For any collector of modern hardcover books the most important element in determining value is the condition of the dust jacket. Practically speaking, a modern Science Fiction or Fantasy hardcover without its dust jacket is of little or no value.

Condition is arguably the single most important factor for determining the value of a book. Every beginning collector should take the time to understand the practical working definitions of condition before investing more than a little money acquiring items for their collection. I highly recommend visiting a reputable bookseller in your area, so that you can learn first hand what books in various conditions are supposed to look like. Talk with them, ask questions. Most people love to talk about what they love and book vendors are no exception. Attend an antiquarian book fair, if at all possible, where you can talk with collectors and sellers alike. A little knowledge can go a long way. By understanding how the condition of a book is determined you’ll go a long way in being able to determine its value. Before long you’ll be well on your way to building a treasured and valuable collection.

A Guide to Buying a Property in South Africa

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Overview

There are no restrictions on foreign nationals investing or buying real estate in South Africa. Indeed, for generations, foreign nationals have been very active in the real estate market in South Africa.

As will be discussed more fully later, real estate in South Africa actually is known as or termed immovable property.

Investment Real Estate

The investment real estate market in South Africa has been profitable for foreign nationals for years. There were some tentative times directly after the end of Apartheid in that country. However, as time has marched on from the period of transition, foreign nationals have carried forth in their investment in South African real estate — immovable property — on many fronts.

By way of example, foreign nationals play a significant role in the ownership of real estate or immovable property in the commercial sector. Foreign nationals own everything from office buildings to hotels and resorts.

There are no restrictions on the types of real estate that a foreign national can invest in within South Africa.

Residential Real Estate - Single Family Dwellings

Many foreign nationals have taken to purchasing some fairly high cost properties in South Africa. These men and woman have purchased these costly residences to be used as second homes and for holiday or vacation purposes. Many people — including a significant number of Europeans — regularly take extended holidays in South Africa. Since the end of Apartheid, a greater number of people from across the globe are taking to spending extended holidays in South Africa. This includes an ever growing number of North Americans, Canadians and U.S. citizens alike.

The single family dwelling market is fast moving and brisk in many different areas of the country. Not only can foreign nationals be found investing in these types of residences in the more urban centers in the country, but they are making purchase of these types of property in rural areas as well. As will be discussed, many foreign nationals enjoy making an extended holiday stay in South Africa (and have done so for many years). Thus, many of these foreign nationals have been interested and continue to be interested in buying single family residences — and at times very substantial properties — in urban and in rural regions of the country where they can live for a portion of the year.

Residential Real Estate - Apartments

Because of the high rate of foreign investment in all sectors of the South African economy, many foreign nationals regularly can be found purchasing apartments in the major urban centers in that country. These foreign nationals find themselves in country for more extended periods of time. These men and women find the purchase of apartments to be an economical manner in which they can provide themselves housing during their time in South Africa on business.

There has also been a brisk business in the buying of apartments in resort communities by foreign nationals. Many foreign nationals are taking a two-pronged approach to buying apartments in resort venues. First, they are using these properties for their own holiday purposes. Second, they are letting out these premises to other foreign nationals when they are not personally using the property. Many foreign nationals have found that they can make a tidy sum by renting or leasing an apartment in a resort locale during that part of the year when they are not personally in residence in the resort community apartment.

Vacation Real Estate

For generations, Europeans and men and women from other countries the world over have made South Africa a holiday destination. Indeed, the history of people from Europe and elsewhere around the world making long and extended holiday stays within South Africa is long and legendary. As a consequence, the market in vacation or holiday real estate in South Africa is well established.

For the foreign national interested in purchasing vacation or holiday property in South Africa, the options and opportunities in regard to such property is extensive and varied. A foreign national has the ability to purchase anything from a high priced villa in a trendy resort community to a snug and tidy apartment in a sprawling urban setting to a lovely chateau in a rural area in the country.

A number of foreign nationals have taken to investing in different holiday and resort properties. Indeed, foreign nationals have been active in the development of hotels, apartments and free standing dwellings that are leased or rented to people who have traveled to South Africa on holiday. Overall, this type of investment has proven to be very lucrative for many foreign nationals from different countries the world over.

Successfully Purchasing Real Estate in South Africa:

Specific Steps to Buying Real Property in South Africa

In South Africa, the laws governing the buying and selling of real estate actually are called laws governing the buying and selling of immovable property or land. At the present time, there are no restrictions on a foreign national buying and owning real estate in South Africa. Indeed, foreign nationals have bought and owned real estate — immovable property — in South Africa for generations.

Generally speaking, the buying and selling of immovable property or real estate in South Africa is governed by decisions of the courts of that country. The one area in which statutory law does play a role when it comes to buying and selling real estate/immovable property in South Africa is in the area of the ownership of mineral rights. When it comes to mineral interests that might be underneath the surface of a particular piece of property, that interest as a general rule belongs to the “people of South Africa.” In other words, even though a foreign national may be able to buy real estate in that country, more often than not a foreign national will not be able to easily purchase a right to extract minerals from that real estate. (Of course, a contract can be entered into with the government that will grant an individual of business the right and the ability to withdraw minerals from underneath the surface of land.)

Because there are some tribes that exercise some degree of local autonomy in South Africa, some foreign nationals wonder what impact these more or less autonomous governing authorities might have on their ability to purchase real estate. Historically, local, tribal or customary law had little impact on the buying and selling of real estate in South Africa. However, in recent years, the national government has given some recognition to parallel lines of authority within the country. Therefore, if a foreign national is interested in buying immovable property in an area that is included within an autonomous, that foreign national will need to make certain that he or she understands the particular regulations in that area that might have an impact on the purchase of real estate in that area. Because there are so many different local variants that might come into play depending on what region of the country a person is considering investing in real estate in, it is impossible to detail them all in this limited space. Therefore, a foreign national who is interested in purchasing real estate in South Africa will want to make certain that he or she has access to very capable legal representation.

The underlying real estate purchasing process in South Africa is simple when all is said and done. A tentative or preliminary contract is entered into between the buyer and seller. As in many other countries around the world, a deposit is made upon the property by the purchaser. The amount of the deposit is negotiated between the parties. Additionally, the terms of under what conditions a deposit might be returned are also negotiated between the parties to the agreement.

Following the execution of this preliminary contract, the buyer will embark on his or her efforts to find appropriate financing for the real estate. There are many different mortgage lenders within South Africa that deal regularly with a foreign clientele. With that said, it is also perfectly permissible for a foreign national to obtain mortgage financing from a firm located in that person’s country of origin. The government of South Africa is flexible as to where a person obtains his or her financing to fund a real estate or immovable property purchase in that country.

Once all of the requirements of the initial agreement have been satisfied, a final agreement of sale and transfer of immovable property is executed between the parties. It is at this juncture, when this agreement is duly executed, that ownership of the immovable property is transferred from the seller to the buyer. With this conveyance, a new title to the real estate is registered immediately with governmental authorities.

Again, it is important to keep in mind that there might be some slight variances in this procedure in some of the more autonomous regions of the country. However, with the assistance of capable legal counsel, a foreign purchaser of immovable property or real estate in South Africa will be able to maneuver through the legal requirements.

Only Your Wisconsin Child Custody Lawyer Knows Best

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Every Wisconsin child custody lawyer knows that this is one of the cases where people are likely to do things that they have not done before or thought they are not capable of. With divorce and child custody cases not having the satisfactory results that they should have, parents turn to desperate means of getting their children back.

For sure, you do not want these things to happen. Not only will it have negative effects on your child, it will also cause you more trouble than you originally have. The best and the only solution for this problem is to avail of the services of good Wisconsin child custody lawyer.

Lawyers in Wisconsin are already aware of the fact that parents tend to kidnap their children and take them as far away from the other parent as possible one their child custody case has not been served well. This is the only way to do it because these parents know that their children are better off with them.

Sometimes the law is not always in favor of those who want to win. As they say, you can never win them all. But if you have a Wisconsin child custody lawyer to help you in the proceedings, then you will realize that whatever decision the court have made is what is best. And since you have presented a likewise good case, you will definitely be assured that justice have been done, even if it is not for your favor.

In the process of your divorce file, it is important that you hire a Wisconsin lawyer with enough knowledge about how child custody works. It follows that after the divorce has been filed, what follows next would be the battle on who should have the custody of the children.

This is the very same reason why the Wisconsin lawyer you choose should have the expertise and experience in handling child custody cases. Take note that the decision that will be made is not on a temporary basis. It will dictate the future that your children will have for the rest of their lives. If you love your children that much, you will go through all the measures to ensure that will be put in the proper place that they deserve.

The Wisconsin child custody lawyer should know enough about certain laws that apply for certain situations. For example, there are laws that are being followed by authorities whenever a child is kidnapped by his or her parent.

The lawyer should tell the parents about those states that do not allow authorities to recover the child if he is in the hands of another parent. Knowing about these things will make the parents aware of precautions that should be taken to avoid this kind of situation from happening.

The Wisconsin child custody lawyer should also dictate the desperate steps that parents are capable of with regards to getting their children. This will evidently prepare them for any unfortunate things from happening. Anticipation is better than being surprised and frustrated when disputes occur.

A Wisconsin child custody lawyer that has the necessary experience needed in solving disputes that might arise is what you should look for. As far the reasoning is concerned, you should be aware of the things that will help you win your case, but also the things that you need to do after the case is finished. Only your Wisconsin lawyer has the capability to tell you about what and what you should not do.

Learning About The Apple Computer

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Are you interested in an Apple computer? That is great news. Below we will review the Apple computer and computers in general. The personal computer has evolved so much in the last decade. Most importantly the actual speeds of these home computers are off the charts. Apple computers have some unique characteristics that differ from other personal computers.

Can you remember the days when there were no computers? Nowadays, one cannot even think without a computer, computers hold such importance in our life. The first one among all, IBM, came with the one with the rolling ball. Through computers, one can perform those things, which one even cannot dream.

The personal computer or P.C. have changed everything particularly, in the manner the documents we create today. This is a cool electronics site www.informationinquiry.com http://www.informationinquiry.com . Rest is history, we are assisted by the computers in each of our activities whether it be work, entertainment or playing games; no one can live without a computer! Due to limited knowledge, some of us still believe that only one kind of computer exists.

Comparing an Apple home computer is like comparing a personal pc as a regular automobile is to a Indy 500 racing car. The Indy car runs, excellent, like a normal automobile. The Indy car (and the Apple home computer) is slick and economical, built for maximum throughput. The regular auto will do what you ask it to do, with some encouraging words. The Apple computer will follow your commands like a King doling out rules. The regular auto needs rest and quite often stops working because it can’t keep up. The Indy car works on and on like a work horse does on a farm.

Well I do not blame you, since you have not seen or used the masters. A Master is like riding a wild horse full of energy and enthusiasm, which never gets tired. Each of us gain knowledge through experience. Therefore, it is high time for you to try the machines like Apple desktop computers or Mac. Whenever you get a chance to handle such a machine, go for it and then you will realize the difference between them. With the change in technology, one should be updated.

You might think that I am just saying this for the sake of it. But, I became a true believer after a month with my Apple desktop when I suddenly realized, it had never crashed even once. The other system crashes about twice a day. If you worked with a PC for a long time, you will need some time to adjust. Not that the Apple computer is difficult; it is just slightly different.

To open a file from the finder known on a PC as the explorer, you can’t press ‘return’. Such things will take time for you to adjust. And here is another thing that is different with an Apple desktop. No viruses. I do not even own a virus cleaning system although I keep a virus checker going in the background on my Apple desktop computer. And what do you think it finds? A Mac is immune to all known viruses.

Another thing, about an Apple computer, that is great is the automatic software updates. You just need to connect to the Net and it automatically calls home for updates. No checking the website, no figuring out what you need. The operating system and installed apple software is updated automatically.

I hope this review of Apple computers was deemed useful by you and your peers. We could easily write for days about Apple computers. They are truly a unique machine and can’t really be compared to other personal computers. Like comparing Apples to bananas! Enjoy your Apple computer!

A Balanced Diet Is A No Brainer

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

What you put into your body determines just how you live or how long you live. Food takes in vital nutrients, giving you energy for life and aiding in all bodily functions. You receive nutrients from food for maturation and health. There candidly isn’t one food has all the nutrients that you need, hence the four basic food groups comes to the rescue. Eating from the four basic food groups enables you to acquire the nutrients you need from eating a balanced diet.

What Are the Basic Nutrients Found in Food?

Fats and carbohydrates are also vital to splendid health. They will give you the energy you need. Multitudinous foods comprise of fat and carbohydrates. Milk, cheese, and butter are rich in fat and foods from the bread and cereal group such as pasta is rich in carbohydrates. Fruits also incorporate a fair amount of carbs. It is advised that you should use fats in your diet sparingly as it can purpose heart malady and unwanted weight gain in some people.

Proteins are an considerable nutrient. Proteins can be found in a wide potpourri of foods. Meat, fish, eggs and poultry are very rich in proteins. Your body utilizes proteins to form advanced cells.

Bounteous people take a daily vitamin supplement. Did you know that you can also get an adequate amount of vitamins from food you eat? Vitamins help your body to grow and maintain stupendous health. The origin of the term vitamin surfaced in the early 1900s. The general consensus was that vitamins contained nitrogen and was consequently spelled “viatmine”. After it was discovered that all vitamins do not emcompass nitrogen, the “e” was dropped.

Vitamins can be found in foodstuffs or can be obtained as an over the counter pharmaceutical. Sometimes when foods containing life-giving vitamins are cooked, a immense deal of those vitamins are lost, so taking supplements may be helpful. If one does not get the required amount of vitamins in his or her diet the metabolic balance can be disrupted and deliberate health problems could arise. Some of the vitamins you will obtain in foods are:

Vitamin A

This is found in carrots, sweet potatoes, melons and green leafy vegetables to name a scattering. Vitamin A is essential for healthy skin and positive eye function.

Vitamin C

This is found in citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons. Broccoli and other dark green leafy vegetables also consist of vitamin C. This vitamin is probably most well known for the effects it has on the cold virus. Taken in additional amounts it has been proven to ward off the cold virus or lessen the effects of it. Vitamin C also gives you healthy bone and blood cells.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D can be found in milk, eggs, and saltwater fish. It will give you strong bones and teeth and help you grow. You can also get vitamin D from the sun.

Thiamin and Niacin

These vitamins help you to digest food and aid in nervous system functions. Foods containing these vitamins include eggs, peas, liver and some meat.

Minerals are another vital nutrient that helps the distinctive parts of the body work as they are meant to. Some of the augmented significant minerals are calcium, iron, potassium, and sodium.

Calcium helps with the growth of teeth and bones as well as the functions of your heart and muscles. Some foods rich in calcium are milk, cheese, yogurt and some vegetables.

Iron is found in liver, beans cereals, some dried fruit and some vegetables. This mineral helps blood carry oxygen to your cells.

Potassium and sodium both help to maintain the function of your muscles and nerves. Foods containing these vital minerals include cereals, salt, and some vegetables to name a scattering.

Understanding the nutrients found in food is just the basic step to eating right. All the foods are divided into four basic food groups. The food groups relief you decide just what you should eat. In each group there are opposed foods with incomparable nutrients. You should eat from the four basic food groups at each meal for a balanced diet.

The four food groups include the milk and dairy group, the meat group, the bread and cereal group and the fruit and vegetable group. You should eat a certain amount of food from each group everyday in order to get all the nutrients you need. Everyday you should have three to four servings of the milk and dairy group; one or two servings form the meat group, three or four servings from the bread and cereal group and three to four servings from the fruit and vegetable group. If you eat the right amount of servings from each group every day you will be eating a balanced diet.

Although water is not considered a nutrient or a food group, it is vital for life. You get water from multitudinous foods, but will get most of your water from by clearly drinking it. Water keeps your body hydrated and aid in blood formation as well as digestion. Drink eight to ten glasses a day for stupendous health.

In summary, schooling to eat right can take some time. Basic awareness of what the food groups consist of as well as what nutrients are and their function is key. A healthy body depends on your eating the right foods along with the right servings of each food.

Myth of the Mainstream

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

‘Mainstream’ - a principal current of a river, 1667, from main (adj.) stream, hence, prevailing direction in opinion, popular taste, etc., a fig. use first attested in Carlyle (1831).

I propose that the concept of ‘the mainstream’, be it music, art, ideas, politics, entertainment and all other social constructs, is and has always been a social myth.

The key to this argument lies in the cyclical nature of the market economy, political thought, and technological advancement. For sake of simplicity, I shall concentrate solely on the development and eventual disintegration of the concept of the ‘mainstream’.

What came before the MP3? The CD.

And before that? Vinyl.

And before that? Shellac and wax drums for musical boxes.

And before that? Sheet Music. Musical Scores.

As funny as it sounds now, at the very dawn of ‘Popular Music’ or pop, a ‘Hit’ technically accounted for the total sales of a sheet of music, a musical score. The expectation and reality of the market was solely reliant on availability of current technologies at the time (namely music boxes and pianos) and the musical ability of the consumer.

For the main part it was more economic to purchase an upright piano rather than a the musical box, purchasing songs for a music box was a privilege of the rich. Imagine paying $500 for an mp3 track? No one in their right mind would, yet the physical nature of such devices meant that supplying a range of music for any device would be beyond the reach of the masses. The ‘Player Piano’ moved things along somewhat, creating rolls of punch paper reduced the costs considerably. For many this was new technology was still out of reach of the average, or even middle income family.

For most, instead of an Ipod, there would stand, pride of place in the Sitting Room or Parlour, a basic upright piano, of which at least one member would be able to read and play music, and the others would at the very least need to hold a whole gamut of decent notes to make the performance painlessly entertaining. The more savvy music publishers (yes they were printers and nothing more), realized early on that if they wanted to increase their sales they’d need to expand their market.

A few seemingly harmless pointers to publishing a popular ‘hit’ led to a series of hard and fast rules that held back the creative growth of the music industry for over a century.

Family friendly. Their market was the Middle-Class Family, they had money, Sunday Evenings with little to do, a strong moral and religious upbringing and a very definite idea of what music should do.

It shouldn’t offend, anyone, anywhere, anyhow. It cannot include any mention of any controversy. The melody must be light, instantly engaging and simple to follow. The whole family must be able to join in and not feel awkward or embarrassed in anyway. Basically hymns.

The market began to fracture eventually, songs for the kids, religious, risque ditties for young lovers and dirty old men, then came style… jazz, blues, big band. Finally wax rolls for musical boxes gave way to shellac and eventually Vinyl discs and as the sound quality improved, and the availability increased and prices reduced, finally those that played the piano instead of a Gramophone, were the rare exception.

The World has changed a lot since then, but as with all things fashion has a funny habit of repeating itself. More and more iPod fans and mp3 addicts are beginning to manipulate their own collections, with the development of a whole series of cheap and cheerful music mixing software releases on the way, it doesn’t seem so far-fetched to imagine a time in the not so distant future where rather than the ‘Mainstream’ we will be talking in terms of Single Streams, or even the ‘Onestream’.

In the past the more forward thinking printers and publishers of the day decided to buy music from songwriters for a pittance, sometimes even steal them outright and make all the profit for themselves. Now things are changing beyond belief.

Anyone can make music to a point with the aid of software and electronic instruments that a child could learn and play within minutes. With the increased interactivity involved in many of the new technologies, the PC being the original focal point, most consumers are no longer purely consuming, they are now producing. Be it their own Tivo TV schedule, the play list on their iPod, the answer phone message they recorded themselves. Consumption was never a creative act, but finally it seems technology is enabling individuals to come to that conclusion by themselves.

Eventually few people will purchase entertainment in any form, simply the means to produce it. As part of my Fine Arts Degree many years ago, I specialized in Photo Montage, appropriating and aggregating a variety of disparate images, and manipulating and combining them to form a new and original work. Nowadays few would ever consider going through the rigmarole of cutting and pasting printed matter when a graphics program and the Internet can provide vast more choice in subject matter and imagery.

Technology has led our actions, or rather inaction for most of the 20th Century, in the 21st we are witnessing the slow decay of Consumerism itself, and at the beginning the first change we are all both witnessing and providing, is technological manipulation of consumer goods.

As the manufacturers of multimedia devices finally catch up with demand we will witness more and more graphic and sound interactivity to the point that most products will simply enable us to create our own entertainment, as we have in histories past. The only difference is that your Bedroom DJ Mix is now heard by the world rather than an unwilling friend or family member. Local heroes and heroines will be born, down the road from my place are the band Keane, a very successful UK pop band from Battle, Sussex. Without the proliferation of social networking technologies I doubt that their meteoric rise to fame would have been as startling.

Other more stark examples are Gnarls Berkley and the Arctic Monkeys, who via the Myspace.com service have become major players in the world music scene. This isn’t simply a technological change. The ‘Futurism’ Arts Movement at the turn of the last century was obsessed with painting fast cars and trains and planes, as much as a young boy might do these days. No one wants to draw an MP3 player, no one wants to write a poem about their Xbox. People want to ‘use’ them, and they do, all of them.

The idea that materialism can enable anything other than a show of wealth has changed, we no longer have toys, we have tools. Consumption is now lured by the idea of Production, the snake is eating itself.

Within your lifetime, your or someone you know will produce something remarkable, the miraculous is about to become commonplace and the ‘Mainstream, obsolete.

The mainstream is diverging into a billion tributaries, the concept of popularity, and eventually mass advertising will dry up, along with monolithic centralized institutions and corporations. We as individuals are finally learning to disagree with each other, we are taking informed and personal choices in our consumption, and eventually the production of our own ’streams’. We fish for ideas, we take those ideas and create our own unique range of arts, entertainment and individual understanding of the world. And when we’re bored with our own minds, we trade our goods with others, some like-minded, some not so.

Music, Art, Entertainment, conceived, designed and produced by the individual for the individual. Very much the way we began. Travelling Minstrels, visiting one village and the next, trading music, trading styles, ideas, even new technologies, but for the main part from home.

There never was a mainstream, the concept of the mainstream was conceived for the convenience of unwieldy organizations with little ability or even impetus to change. Like a vast dam, blocking and filtering the river, it is now beginning to crumble, and creative sources and flowing in from all directions, a veritable waterfall of new ideas, sounds and images are about to be born.

The Ultimate Guide To Choosing A Limousine Service

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

There are several types of limousines available (SUV, stretch limo, party bus, etc.). Choose the type that works best for your occasion, taking into consideration how many are in your party and what your plans are.

In selecting the limousine company, you want to make sure the one you choose is properly licensed and insured. Although it may appear to be less expensive to hire an unlicensed limousine provider, if an accident were to happen and someone in your party were to get hurt, you would have no recourse. You can ask around to representatives from other companies that regularly use limousine services to find out about various limousine companies’ reputations.

Find out if the company has a contingency plan in case the limousine is in an accident or breaks down. If not, then you have two choices. You either have a backup plan in mind or hire another limousine service that you know does have a contingency plan. Conversely, it may be you that has unforeseen problems, so make sure you know in advance what the company’s cancellation policy is.

The cost to rent a limousine can range between $50 and $150. Ask the limousine company what amenities are included in the price. Knowing up front what you are and are not getting eliminates surprises later. Costs can vary based on current demand (such as during prom and wedding seasons). It’s worth checking with your local hotel and airport limousine services because many times you can get a better rate through them.

You’ll want to know up front whether or not the company accepts credit cards. Once the service has been booked ask for a written confirmation to be faxed or sent in the mail. Another critical action you need to take is to make sure you are getting the car you asked for. Just before the event, arrange to see the car and check it out. Is it clean? Does it smell like cigarette smoke? Are you getting an “older” (interpret as less reliable and less comfortable) limousine? Be sure to have all those problems and questions addressed before the time of pickup.

If there are several people in your party, it’s always a good idea to have everyone in your party meet at one location to avoid extra pickup and drop off time. I realize that sometimes this is part of the fun, so use that as a guideline, but realize the cost may go up if the driver has to make extra stops. To avoid any awkward moments between you and the driver, be sure you know the company’s tipping policies. Some encourage it while others don’t. It’s also a very good idea to get the chauffeur’s name and cell phone number to maintain contact and get a hold of them if necessary if the timeline changes and your group needs to be picked up earlier or later.

Policies vary between companies regarding pets. Some allow them while others don’t. If you need to travel with your pet, you’ll want to know this in advance. Also, if you have special needs such as a child seat or handicapped person(s), you’ll want to address this with the company beforehand.

If you plan carefully and ask the right questions while you are still in the selection process, you’ll be more likely to choose the service that best suits your needs and adds a nice touch to whatever event or meeting your are attending.

Is Your Content Actually Connecting?

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

The written word is king of the marketing hill these days. Between the intangible nature of services and the intangible marketing challenge known as the Internet, having content that increases interest and drives sales is a service firm imperative.

When selling services, content is your free sample, the equivalent of the people in supermarkets giving out little cups of various kinds of food products for you to try before you buy. OK, well, maybe not exactly like that, but thematically the same. Your content conveys your company’s personality (known in more stuffy business circles as your culture) as well as your expertise, which are both part of the criteria applied by prospects when making buying decisions.

So here’s the question that constitutes the title of this article: Is your content actually connecting? You can have loads of articles, white papers, web pages, and email messages, but if the words in those pieces aren’t making a strong connection to your market, all that content is worthless.

Here are some suggestions for creating connections with content:

Be context specific. A piece of content needs to talk to a specific audience at the right level. If you market to financial advisors, for example, assume that your reader understands the financial planning field at least at an intermediate level if not higher. Don’t write Finance 101 stuff for these folks. If, on the other hand, you are a financial advisor selling your services to small and solo business owners, assume that your reader is knowledge-deficient in the exact areas where you shine. Content for the first group would be way beyond the second set of readers, while content for second set would bore if not insult the first group.

Write like you talk. Said another way, write like your company talks. The style, voice, and tone of your content will be very different if you have a more informal shorts and t-shirt way of doing business than if you are operating out of an urban high-rise and dress for success in designer duds. Keep your language and style consistent with how you want to be perceived.

Stay away from the third person. Use first and second person in your content. If the piece is authored by one person, as with an article or a white paper, use first person singular; if the speaker is the company, use we and us. Talk directly to the reader using you and your.

Be inclusive and at the same level. Involve your reader. Instead of saying if one looks at this situation, say if we look, or let’s look. And instead of being instructive or positioning yourself as the guru on the mountain, stand next to the reader. The challenge we face is… is far more attractive in the reader’s mind than the challenge facing you is… Avoid potentially condescending or patronizing phrases like, You need to understand… or It should be obvious that…

Finally, be passionate. We are all passionate about what we offer, and we need to be proud to show it. I, for example, think that good, authentic content will pave the way to quality relationships with great customers. That’s why content is a practice all by itself at 4R, why I talk about it so much, and why I enjoy creating the right content for my clients.

Why Do Men Pay For Escorts?

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

The first image that comes to my mind when hear the word Escort is an athletic woman with jet-black hair, sparkling brown eyes, olive tan, an incredible behind, a smile to die for and 4 inch black pump heels - at true Latina beauty. But that’s enough about me. So why is it that so many men contact women over the internet via On-Line Adult Directories and flip through local newspaper Adult Entertainment pages searching for the perfect hot n’ sexy date? Most men say they are lonely and would appreciate the company of a beautiful woman for just an hour or two to fill the void.

Many men say that they pay for sex because it “is easy to get exactly what you want”. You don’t have to worry about any surprises. When you have the option of setting up a date by viewing a picture of your dream girl, reading her description and simply making a telephone call (or sending an e-mail) and your date shows up at your door 30 minutes later, it almost sounds too perfect.

Other men that I have interviewed make a point to emphasize that paying for sex via calling upon an escort is ideal because there is “no emotional attachment with the other person”. You don’t have to sit down at a dinner table (unless you want to) and listen to your date go on and on about all of the generally boring stories about their life and what ails them. On the other hand, your date will readily listen to you ramble on about your personal problems as long as you are on the clock.

Do men enjoy watching porn movies? Try this, ask 100 men if they have ever watched an adult movie and if the enjoy doing so. The overwhelming response to your question will undeniably be a YES. Some lucky guys do find a partner that enjoys porn just as much if not more than he does. Most men will agree that their girlfriend or wife does not watch porn however this may be not be the case for everyone you speak to. This is another reason some men pay for sex, they fantasize about ‘the porn-star experience’. Deep down inside the majority of men yearn for that wild, kinky, sloppy, crazy … you know what I mean. Paying a few hundred bucks for mind blowing latex fueled sex doesn’t sound like too bad of an investment if your regular (sex) life is boring. Variety and spice may be good thing.

Not many men will admit they are afraid of rejection. Well guess what, we are. The vast majority of men would rather not be turned down after asking a girl out on a date or to a movie. It’s just a daunting thing. There are rarely turn down’s when arranging a date with an escort unless she is all booked or under the weather. Tomorrow is another day and your luck ought to improve with another telephone call.

So you have just ended your 2 or 4 hour date with the woman of your dreams and she really seemed to care about you. Now she’s gone and guess what, you’re lonely again. Was it worth it? Only you will truly know.

Custom Development Software - Genie In A Package

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Technology is making the world approach newer developments everyday and today, high competition compels us to find the best programming packages that fulfill the exact needs of our businesses in minimum possible time and at most appropriate budget. This demand brings the idea of custom development software. These are exclusive programs created with the demands of a specific business in mind and differ from the off-the-shelf programs, which may not meet individual business specifications. Also, a readily- available package, at times, is difficult to operate unlike the custom development software solutions. However, the requirement for great expertise and knowledge is paramount for developing custom software as much as the powerful backing of proven processes.

The field of custom development has opened opportunities for every one: employees, partners and clients. The professionalism that one expects from software developers and a development company are thus reflected from the timely delivery of projects, stating of major project goal accomplished, and timely assistance: be it in any difficulty or general help, a reliable custom development software company shall see that all these services are taken care of.

The Benefits of custom development software

* Less expensive as compared to generic applications.
* Lack undesirable features that are of no use to a certain business unlike readily available ones.
* Saves time.
* Easier to operate.
* Flexible for future modifications.

The Process

Custom developing starts with identifying the goals and the needs of a business. That way, one gets the exact features that are needed, saving time for both the business and its employees.

With discussing the requirements and performing a detailed analysis of your business, the process for building custom software starts off. Software professional and developers then get started with the development and designing.

The effectiveness of custom development software depends upon many factors. These are:

* Supporting processes.
* A team of professionals and their expertise in the domain.
* Company Infrastructure.
* Customer support.
* Software Quality.
* Maintenance and support

Finding the right service provider

It is of utmost importance for the team to understand the type of business to develop the software. A well-planned and structured approach is thus important to bring about an effective functionality. However, before outsourcing the orders for custom development software, one must go for a prior research to find out the best software development company that holds a sound experience, employs robust software development processes and lays great emphasis on testing and quality assurance. An offshore development center and a dedicated team adds extra benefits to the service buyer in terms of observation of the entire project.
